  The corner of Meeting and Broad Streets in Charleston, S.C., has four buildings, which each represent different legal jurisdictions: St. Michael’s Episcopal Church representing God’s law, Charleston City Hall representing city law, the Charleston County Courthouse (originally the provincial capital) representing state law, and the Federal Courthouse (and U.S. Post Office) representing federal laws.   Fort Moultrie is a series of fortifications on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, built to protect the city of Charleston. The first fort, formerly named Fort Sullivan, built of palmetto logs, inspired the flag and nickname of South Carolina as “The Palmetto State.” The Battle of Fort Sullivan is said to be the first decisive American victory of the American Revolution. The fort was renamed for the U.S. patriot commander in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, General William Moultrie.
