  Part of the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park, operated by the National Park Service, Fort Sumter is the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter, which began the American Civil War in 1861. Damaged during the war and left in ruins, the fort is situated on an artificial island in Charleston dating back to the early 1800s.

The Southern Live Oak tree is a historical site and focal point of one of the City of Charleston’s public parks.   The Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, South Carolina. Named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which meet here to form Charleston Harbor.   On February 12, 1736 the Dock Street Theatre opened with a performance of The Recruiting Officer. Built on the corner of Church Street and Dock Street (now known as Queen Street), the Historic Dock Street Theatre was the first building in America built exclusively to be used for theatrical performances.   The corner of Meeting and Broad Streets in Charleston, S.C., has four buildings, which each represent different legal jurisdictions: St. Michael’s Episcopal Church representing God’s law, Charleston City Hall representing city law, the Charleston County Courthouse (originally the provincial capital) representing state law, and the Federal Courthouse (and U.S. Post Office) representing federal laws.   Fort Moultrie is a series of fortifications on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, built to protect the city of Charleston. The first fort, formerly named Fort Sullivan, built of palmetto logs, inspired the flag and nickname of South Carolina as “The Palmetto State.” The Battle of Fort Sullivan is said to be the first decisive American victory of the American Revolution. The fort was renamed for the U.S. patriot commander in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, General William Moultrie.
